FAQs

How does high school swim & dive work?

Season Details

  • Interest meeting in late August
  • Registration in September
  • Season runs through Oct-Jan (State meet is in early Feb)
    • First practice is early Oct - Swim practices are every weekday in the afternoon at a county aquatic center. Dive practices are twice a week. Specific times and locations will be announced closer to the start of the season.
    • First Meet date eligible to compete per GHSA is the end of October. We have 9 meets from October to January. For those that qualify, the County meet is in late January, and the State meet is in early February.

Every freshman is eligible to compete! But they must remain eligible after the first semester since we are a winter sport.

Our sport is a great CONDITIONING SPORT if you play fall and spring sports. It’s competitive and FUN! We have many cross country and track athletes that get great off-season cardio, and our baseball players say that swimming is great for their shoulders.

Swim & Dive - Is this one team or two?

Divers have their own practices with specialized dive coaches and divers from other schools. Divers compete both with our team in regular season meets AND in a few dive-only meets with other divers in the county/region. Divers essentially get to be a part of two teams, the MV Swim & Dive and their practice dive team/group! They get the best of both worlds.

Additionally, athletes can participate in both swim and dive. They will practice with their dive group two nights a week and with the swim group three nights a week. We have had many athletes participate in both!

Can I try diving before I commit to the team?

Yes! Collins Hill Aquatic Center is hosting Dive Clinics for athletes interested in learning how to dive. This is a fantastic way to see if this may be something you are interested in. Click HERE to learn more about these clinics.

Summer League

We encourage all our swimmers to think about joining a Summer League team. Summer League is a great way to stay in shape and refine the skills you will use on the MVHS Swim and Dive team. Here are some teams that are in our area we suggest:

List of Distances/Events

Events are different distances for high school compared to summer league. Boys compete first, followed by girls, in each event. The order is as follows:

  • 200 Medley Relay (4x50 - back, breast, fly, free)
  • 200 Freestyle
  • 200 Individual Medley/IM (fly, back, breast, free)
  • 50 Freestyle
  • 1M Diving
  • 100 Butterfly
  • 100 Freestyle
  • 500 Freestyle
  • 200 Freestyle Relay (4x50)
  • 100 Backstroke
  • 100 Breaststroke
  • 400 Freestyle Relay (4x100)

Do I have to be a year-round athlete/have been swimming/diving since I was little in order to compete in college?

Not at all! We have had 13+ athletes over the last 6 years sign to compete in college, and nearly half of those were athletes that did summer league only or other sports like gymnastics or baseball before trying swim and dive.

Some of our collegiate athletes came to us as pretty new athletes during their freshman year, and they went on to swim or dive in D2 and D3 colleges. This is a great sport to give you opportunities in college, even if you have never swam/dove before.

We are proud to have former MV Swim & Dive athletes go on to compete at schools such as LSU, IUPUI, Marshall University, Birmingham Southern, Centre College, College of Idaho, Piedmont University, William Peace University, Niagara University, Emmanuel College, and more!

Club Swimming is also a growing collegiate activity and can offer many of the benefits of a competition collegiate swim team without all of requirements and huge commitment of competition collegiate swimming. UGA, Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern and Auburn all have fantastic club swim programs with teams who go on training trips together, compete against other colleges and even travel to a national collegiate club swimming competition each year.

My question isn't up here. How can I find the answer?
